 PARKS AND RECREATION

The City of New Hampton, the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Department Staff, and volunteers work diligently to develop, implement, manage and improve our facilities, programs and the quality of our service.

PARKS

The Parks and Recreation Department maintains over 50 acres in the six City parks and provides recreational programs throughout the year.

Mikkelson Park (east on Highway 24) is the location of the majority of our attractions.  Located in this park is our pool, complete with water slide, children's activity pool, and diving area.  The Park also contains handicap accessible restrooms, seven picnic shelters, the Wooden Wonderland play area, the Charles Kime Bandshell, a lighted baseball field and softball complex, a NEW skateboard park, volleyball courts, disc golf course, playground areas, horseshoe pits, and open play spaces.

Other park facilities include a nature trail, pond with fishing piers, native grass and wildflower area, winter ice rink and more playground areas, basketball courts, softball fields, sand volleyball courts and open play spaces.

Campgrounds:  Located within walking distance of Mikkelson Park are 25 campsites that have hookups for water, sewer and electricity.  There is also a large area for tent camping.  There are also men and women's restrooms and showers and a dump station located within the campground.  The campground does not accept reservations, it is a 1st come/1st serve campground.  Campers: $15.00 nightly, $100/weekly, $200/monthly.  Tents: $10 nightly, $50 weekly (14 day max).  Dump Station for Non-campers $3.00.  Make checks payable for camping to Boy Socut Troop 48.  Contact Roger Stansbery at 641/394-2758 with any questions.

Snowmobiling Ordinance - No person shall operate a snowmobile upon any portion of any City Park, except such places that the Commission may specifically designate.

PARK SHELTER RESERVATION INFORMATION

All Park Shelter Reservations can be made through the New Hampton Parks and Recreation Office, located in the Community Center, 112 East Spring Street, New Hampton, Iowa, 50659.

Shelter Reservations:  The first day for accepting shelter reservations Monday, January 4, 2010 at 8:00 am  After the first day, shelters can then be reserved during regular office hours (Monday through Friday 7:00 am - 4:00 PM).  Shelters are reserved on a first come/request - first serve basis.  Shelters are not guaranteed from year to year.

Reservations can be made by phone by calling (641) 394-5464 or stop by the Recreation Office located at 112 East Spring Street, New Hampton.   We will answer your call or return your message when we are finished with our walk in customers.

Shelter Fees will be paid on the day the reservation is made.  Reservations made by phone have 10 days to make the correct payment.  Shelter reservations that have not been paid within the 10 days allotted, will have their reservations canceled.

            Mikkelson Park - There are seven shelters available at Mikkelson Park.   All shelters at every park can be reserved for $30.00.

            Runion Park - There is one shelter available for reservation at this park located just East of Mercy Medical Center.  Runion Park has a playground area, open space, and basketball court area.  The shelter can be reserved for $30.

            Garnant Park - There is one shelter located at this nature park on Garnant Pond, just 1/2 mile south of New Hampton on S. 4th Ave.  This shelter can be reserved for $30.

            Randall Park - There is one shelter located for reservation at this park located on the north end of town on North Foley Avenue.   Randall Park has a basketball area, open spaces, sand volleyball, and toys.  This shelter may be reserved for $30.

RECREATION

    Year round recreational programs are offered through the department for both youth and adults.  Youth activities include flag football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, ice skating, cross country skiing, little league, swim lessons, tennis, tot lot, playground, drill team, art safari, golf lessons, Hershey Track and Field, special events, and seasonal special events.

    Adult activities include open and league volleyball, racquetball, aerobics, fitness training, cross country skiing, ice skating, tennis lessons, and golf lessons.

    Register for a program through the Park and Recreation Office.

    The Parks and Recreation Department works in conjunction with the New Hampton School District in cooperative use of their facilities for athletic programs.   Throughout the year our park facilities are used for community and school events which include High School baseball and softball, Heartland Days, the Davis Rally, Fourth of July Fireworks, and bandshell performances scheduled through New Horizons-Chamber and the Carnegie Cultural Center.

COMMUNITY CENTER

   The Community Center is maintained by the City of New Hampton and is the site of many of our programs.  The building is used by the scout groups, Tae Kwon Do, the Parent/Child Connection, the Post Prom Party, and by many other organizations for meetings and special events.  The facility is available for rent by private groups.
